Located on the eastern shore of Puget Sound, midway between Seattle and Tacoma, Des Moines' history dates from about 1867. The City was named after the Des Moines City Improvement Company that was named after Des Moines, Iowa and is pronounced de moin'.
The first known settler was John Moore, who probably arrived about 1867. The first Des Moines homestead claim certificate was granted to John Moore in 1872. In 1890, the Des Moines News described the city as "The best and most prosperous city on Puget Sound." By the 1900's Puget Sound was a busy waterway, providing transportation, food and recreation.
